On 8th October 2010 , two groups of our school went to visit two very representative monuments in A Coruña . They are part of our ancient and not so ancient history .
The weather was not very nice : cold, wind and rain , but our good temper coped with everything .
San Anton Castle
San Anton Castle : Situated at one corner of the port , it was a military building to defend the town and the bay . It was built five centuries ago . Prison and hospital were old uses for this monument. Today it houses an archaeological museum with ancient remains which tell us many things about life in our town and country .
The Tower of Hercules is an ancient Roman lighthouse . It´s located in A Coruña .Its height is 55 metres and it is almost 1900 years old ( aprox.) . Nowadays , it is the oldest Roman lighthouse which already works.
Originally it was constructed with an ascending ramp surrounding its sides, for oxen to bring wood to keep the fire and the light at night .Then it was 34 metres tall .
Since 27th June 2009 it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and you can overlook the North Atlantic coast of Spain from the top of it .
Let´s go !
We are ready for the trip
THE CASTLE
Entrance to the castle . Many stones
At last …….. The gate !! It is very exciting !!
Here , we can watch old weapons
We are on the top of the castle . A Coruña is behind us
THE TOWER
The Tower of Hercules . It is there . Lonely and helpful for the boats.
It is very cold . I think we are going to freeze
A long , very long staircase
It has got 242 steps
Very long ………. but interesting
A view from the top of the tower
